Tuned Mass Dampers for the Slussen Footbridge in Stockholm
Eight Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) have been integrated into the new Slussen Footbridge in Stockholm to reduce vibrations and improve pedestrian comfort. Installed within the bridge’s steel structure, the dampers are designed to control resonance modes across the different spans of the bridge.
“It’s been 10 years since my colleague Anders and I visited ELU Konsult to discuss TMDs for this bridge. It was interesting to finally follow the construction on site in Stockholm.”

Vibration Control Solution
The Slussen Footbridge is one of Stockholm’s most prominent infrastructure projects. To control structural vibrations and ensure a comfortable experience for pedestrians, eight Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) have been integrated into the bridge’s steel structure.
Each TMD weighs 3.5 tonnes and has been carefully tuned to dampen the resonance modes of the different bridge spans within the frequency range of 1.5–2.5 Hz. The dampers are positioned inside the steel sections of the bridge, providing an effective vibration control solution while remaining completely hidden from view.
Final Tuning on Site
The final on-site tuning of the TMDs will be carried out once the top layers of concrete and asphalt have been added. This ensures that the damping system is optimally adjusted to the bridge’s final weight and dynamic characteristics.
A Collaborative Effort
Vibratec would like to thank GERB for their excellent support and quick delivery, as well as Skanska for the opportunity to contribute to this exciting project.

Case Study: Tuned Mass Dampers for Pedestrian Bridge in Malmö
During the structural design of the pedestrian bridge at Bagers Plats in Malmö, it became obvious that it would require a TMD, as the lowest vertical was calculated to 1.85 Hz.Vibratec designed a TMD solution: in total 2 TMD’s with a vibration mass of each 340 kg was installed in the mid section of the…
